Gategate Gallery

Gategate Gallery occupies a distinctive setting on Van Mieu Street, directly opposite the Temple of Literature. Gate Gate is envisioned as a gateway standing outside the limits of time, a threshold connecting artists with art lovers. The name "Gate Gate" comes from a Sanskrit mantra meaning "gone, gone beyond" — escaping fixed boundaries and default assumptions to open up a new way of perceiving. Drawing on that context and spirit, we propose a journey that leads visitors from the street into the exhibition space within. Inspired by the village gate of traditional architecture, the boundary between outside and inside is not divided abruptly but transitions through an enclosed corridor. This space acts as a pause, gradually separating visitors from the noise of the city street before they step into the stillness needed to experience art. That journey also expresses a shift between everyday life and the experience of art, between familiar pursuits and the ability to perceive things differently. The entire passage is finished in a striking orange-red, both strengthening the identity of a recessed façade and giving Gategate Gallery its own distinct mark. The colour also recalls the traditional palette of the Temple of Literature opposite, opening a dialogue between the new building and its surrounding historical context.
